Dwarfses, precious

This is the 99th post. I shall have to think of something special for the 100th... anyhoo, have some Hobbit art.

I used the movie designs because I adore them, but a scene from the book because I like the book story infinitely better.

Kili, Thorin, and Bilbo, from left to right. And a barrel. I like the barrel.

And Will from Ranger's Apprentice. Plus a prisoner. A Genovesan. I don't even know what I was doing with the Genovesan, but Will's cloak was fun. (I got gray COPIC markers for Christmas and have been making good use of them. <3)

I don't know, I felt like drawing shippy things. Gilan (John Flanagan/my friend Ninja) and Inga (my other friend Inky) respectively.

Random sketches of Inky's characters (and some of other people's chars.)

Some Blank expressions (and some younger Blank). :3

Jötnar Are Cool (No Pun Intended)

So...I totally have a thing for Icelandic words and all those gorgeous accents. <3 As a result, all of the names in Ninth Twilight got changed from the Anglicized versions (Odin became Oðinn, Thor became Thórr, etc.) to the Old Norse versions. (And technically Thor should be Þórr, but most people won't know how to pronounce the first letter, so I had to Anglicize that. Sigh.) Anyways, been doing a bit of worldbuilding for the jötnar; I'm mapping out some basics so that I can start delving deeper.

Here's a quick overview of my jötnar. :3
------------
Jötnar (singular, jötunn), are creatures with immense amounts of chaos magic. All full jötnar are shapeshifters, and half-jötnar or less than that are usually shapeshifters as well (though not always). There are five different ‘breeds’ of jötnar: earth, fire, frost, rime, and storm. Earth jötnar live primarily in Miðgarðr, fire jötnar in Múspellsheimr, frost jötnar in Jötunheimr, rime jötnar in Nifelheimr, and storm jötnar in Yggdrasil.

Chaos magic, unlike Kvasiran magic, is largely instinctive and controlled by emotion. It manifests itself in sparks of colored energy around the jötunn, visible only to users of magic. When the jötunn feels extreme emotion or desires something strongly, their magic will lash out or work to obtain that desire without the jötunn’s knowledge. Conscious use of chaos magic involves willing something to happen strongly enough to make the magic bound to the user respond. It’s an unpredictable and dangerous form of magic, as suggested by the name, and while it is the purest and most powerful form of magic in the Nine Worlds, it is also very difficult to control and direct.

Each breed of jötunn is aligned to a particular element, and their magic tends to warp the world around them towards that element. Fire jötnar cause forest fires where they walk, frost jötnar bring snow storms in their wake, storm jötnar fill the air with static electricity, and earth jötnar cause earthquakes and shifts in landscape. The ancient rime jötnar never go anywhere that their magic would have to warp the world to suit them, but if they did, they would bring frost and ice. Jötnar have difficulty shapeshifting into animals not compatible with their element; for instance, fire jötnar cannot become fish and earth jötnar cannot become birds.

Their typical forms are humanoid, ranging from eight to fifteen feet tall. Skin tone is anywhere from absolutely white to nearly black, and color varies between breeds; earth jötnar tend to come in shades of brown, frost jötnar in blue, rime jötnar in shades of slate and gray-blue, fire jötnar in dark red (though fire jötnar are typically covered in magma and rock, so their skin color is usually not discernable), and storm jötnar in shades of gray.

Boda--as a dude

Just a bit of genderbend. Angrboda, Loki's first wife, as a dude.

Those darn shapeshifters. :P

Genderbending Is Fun

A few genderbend sketches. Pointy-eared girl is Loki, other one is Odin. They met with a shapeshifting accident and are having trouble changing back, which explains the odd little doodles down there.

(This is totally canon. :3)

Genderbending characters, whether it's canon or not, is actually a really fun exercise. If you can make the characters recognizable even when they're different genders, you have succeeded at character design.

If you only write, well, character reactions to suddenly being the wrong gender is pretty funny too. XD

Odin

Odin's color scheme and general appearance.

Character Design Practice

Another post! 'Cause I'm too lazy to edit! =D

So these are twelve chars (not all of them mine) who I've drawn, and I needed to test my character design abilities, see how different I could make them look.

1. Caesar (Sparkly Viking Vampire Aliens)
2. Loki (If you don't know my Loki, you're new. Go look through the blog. He's from my series Ninth Twilight, by the by.)
3. Thor (Ninth Twilight)
4. Odin (Ninth Twilight)
5. Brandy (Sparkly Viking Vampire Aliens)
6. Azos (All That Is Gold; Rayle's story)
7. Sixes (Deep Six; by Midnight Aster)
8. Fenris (Ninth Twilight)
9. Jorgi (Ninth Twilight)
10. Boda (Ninth Twilight)
11. Gilan (Ranger's Apprentice, John Flanagan)
12. Odin, genderbent. (Ninth Twilight)

Some SVVA doodles

I've been missing the world of the pathetic superheroes, so here are a few doodles of Caesar and a couple of the rest of the cast.
1. Caesar, he is a kitty. (words: wat. wat is this)
2. Just before chapter four, where they go to rescue Lucky based on Caesar's mad plan. (words: Don't even think about double-crossing us. Phin may have issues disposing of trash but I don't.)
3. Blank. Smiling. I claim temporary insanity. (words: kill it with fire)
4. Lucky and Caesar fell asleep together. I love drawing chars sleeping together innocently.
5, 6, 7, 9, 10; SVVA heads. Caesar, Caesar, Caesar, Lucky, Blank, Phin. (7: That's PRINCE Caesar to you. 8: Lucky. 10: Phin is not impressed.)
11. Chicken. :3
12. Caesar trying honey.

Boloki and Tessie

This is Bolin from the Legend of Korra TV show.

Now, if you've seen the show, you know he looks nothing like his older brother Mako. So my and Aster's headcanon is that he's adopted.

...whiiich lead to a Marvel crossover. I present to you the work in progress of Boloki!

Yes, random, I know. Shaddup. =P

And here's the finished product:
Gah, all those green tones were soooo hard to differentiate. XP I know they're supposed to be gray, but I don't have any gray markers, and I know the glowstick of destiny should also be gray, but it's gold for the same reason his robes are green.

And a page of Loki and Sloan's daughter, Tessie. Going for a scrapbook feel; and yes, I know it's hideous right now. Still debating what I'm going to do with it in terms of finishing: pure graphite, plain ink, copics?

Aret (fondly referred to as jotunbunny)

Meet Aret Hakonsson, one of the few jotun survivors of Ragnarok. He's young and very easy-going, with his flaw being that he has trouble committing to things and making decisions. He also has issues with his magic; it's weak enough to combine with Kvasiran runes, but even then he struggles with channeling it anywhere useful. His one strength is that he can shift quickly and easily into a rabbit.

I didn't say that it was a useful strength.

He usually goes around as a bunny and changes back to jotun only to communicate with people. He finds people are more likely to carry him around rather than making him walk when he's a rabbit, which is good for his lazy streak.

When he's a bunny, he has silky smooth fur that's ice cold to the touch, but when you stroke him it slides past your fingers, slick and soft, so you really don't mind. Just don't snuggle up to him as a bunny. (You can clearly see I have a very active imagination, active enough to be able to pet a bunny that's not really there. o.O)

He also looks roughly like that when he's a bunny.

He belongs to a story inspired by the idea that the world is cyclical: each time Ragnarok happens, the worlds are born anew, until they meet their apocalypse and the cycle starts over. After Ragnarok, the Norse end of the world in my story, Sigyn, wife of Loki, is devastated by his death. But wise Mimir, a rime jotun who is so ancient he has seen Ragnarok happen twice, tells her not to fear: Loki will be reborn with the rest of the Nine Worlds in a new body and she simply has to find him. So she does, and along the way she meets Aret. It's quite a fun idea.

Thus has been Quill's random character/story update.
